The Olympia Thurston County Crime Stoppers Organization has an on-going partnership with the citizens, schools, media and law enforcement of Thurston County to work together to apprehend criminals to keep our communities safe and educated about crime.  Anonymous tips and information received are forwarded to the proper authority to act on if warranted.

The Olympia Thurston County Crime Stoppers was established on March 1, 1991 through the joint efforts of John McCarthy, a Thurston County resident, and Commander Ed Sorger of the Lacey Police Department; he is currently the Chief of Police Services for the Evergreen State College and the Crime Stoppers’ Program Coordinator.  The program’s start-up costs were provided by a one-time grant from the Washington State Legislature.  Each local law enforcement agency was asked to appoint two officers to the board directors.

Crime Stoppers serves over 258,332 people in Thurston County.  As the county grows Crime Stoppers is attempting to grow with them.  In order to communicate with all segments of the citizenry they provide a 24/7 bilingual call center.  From senior citizens to the Millenniums they are structuring their message so all understand they are there to support and help them.

Crime Stoppers introduced a Text-A-Tip Program into schools and the students immediately got involved.  They receive a range of tips about crimes: bullying, drug usage, vandalism, assaults, bomb threats and false fire alarms.  They also sort calls dealing with student depression and possible suicides all of which are turned over to student counselors and community services.  In 2014 they will extend this program to the citizens of the county.

To get the Crime Stoppers message out to the public they are involved with service clubs, Home Owner Associations, churches, PTAs, and local businesses.  This effort has shown to be the best way to interact and answer questions about their program.

The Board of Directors is made up of 15 volunteers of whom three are retired law enforcement officers.  There are 20 volunteer members of the Advisory Board of which 16 are current law enforcement officers.  There are two part-time employees acting as the Business Director and the TipSoft Administrator.  There are no full-time employees.

In 2013 they celebrated 22 years of service to Thurston County.  Their Board of Directors endeavors to be fiscally responsible as they are 100% supported by donations from citizens, businesses and applicable grants.
